Facebook revamps their Pages, throws out your beautiful landing page

We got something of an unexpected surprise from Facebook this morning with the release of their new Facebook Pages layout. A few weeks ago, Facebook revamped users' profiles, so it's only logical that the next was to make their Pages feature look similarly slick. To those who don't know the difference, Facebook 'profiles' are a personal page where you connect with your friends and family and Facebook Pages are for a company, brand or product: basically a 'Fan page'.At the moment our Social Media NZ page seems to getting the short end of the stick in this roll-out, however we had a chance to play around with the new layout this morning before Facebook's little hiccup (by "little hiccup" we mean the site went offline and disabled the feature for some). A tweet from Facebook indicates that the system released the feature tool early for Facebook's liking:It took me a few minutes to navigate through the new features, but what was most noticeable were the missing tabs from atop the new profile - they've switched to the left sidebar. There were also some new features that weren't there before, such as:

  • The ability to post to a Page of which you are an admin. This is a much-requested feature, because now there is an opportunity to put a face behind the brand, unlike before where you could only post updates as the brand. An organisation with lots of admins will find this feature particularly useful.
  • The ability to ask questions and create polls to engage your fans.

It's likely that the removal of Page tabs will annoy many a business who spent a lot of money setting up custom tabs. Previously, you could set 'landing tabs', which meant that when a user arrived on a company's Facebook page they were greeted by a custom landing page. Now, however, businesses will need to be more creative in the way they promote their content on Facebook. We would love to hear your thoughts on this new update from Facebook. How are you finding the new Page layout? Are the changes beneficial or an unnecessary pain?
